Samskṛtam Reading Class (SRC)

Goal:

Samskṛtam Reading Class (SRC) program for children and adults aims to enable children and adults of San Antonio Chinmaya Mission families read Samskṛtam comfortably. An additional goal is to enable every student in this class to read simple prayers.

Motivation: Why Learn Samskṛtam?

1. Samskṛtam is the language in which our (Sanatana Dharma) philosophy and way of life has been codified
2. Learning to read Samskṛtam is critical to understanding and discovering our roots
3. Learning Samskṛtam helps us to fluently and properly chant simple Shlokas and stotras
4. It is a lot of fun to learn a new language.

What:

1. Introduction to Samskṛtam using IAST and Devanagari alphabets for reading and writing
2. Lessons on IAST and Devanagari script reading – simple words and sentences (with meanings)
3. Primer on ‘Chandas’ – meters of shloka composition
4. Reading lessons on shlokas from various scriptures including Subhashitaani, Hitopadesa, Ramayana
5. Class material will be shared via Google Classroom
